Hura Tahiti 2015 Overall Round - Melanie Amen

While dance unifies humanity, different cultures have developed their own unique styles. In Tahiti, the hura is the traditional dance for women and is characterized by the incredible hip-shaking seen in this video. And as for the dancer? Melanie Amen is quite possibly the best dancer of this style in the world. I could watch her all day...
She's only 19 years old, but she's an old hand at Tahitian dance. She has been dancing since she was a tiny toddler and began competing three short years later, at the age of five. Although she's from Stockton, California, Amen has certainly mastered the quick hip movements found in Tahitian dance. She's even traveled to compete against native Tahitians ... and won! In 2016, Amen performed in the Ori Tahiti Nui World Dance Championship in Tahiti and beat out over a dozen other women for the top spot. In this video, she can be seen performing in the solo section of the Hura Tahiti competition, which takes place in Amen's home state of California. Not-so-surprisingly, she took first place there, too. Just one quick glance at her performance and it's easy to see why she's such a winner.
