This map shows the aerial comparison of Mars' Valles Marineris and Earth's Grand Canyon. The grey tone is a hillshade analysis of Marineris based on the Univ. of Arizona's HiRISE data from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The Red is the entire geologic base area of the USGS's Geology of the Grand Canyon (the entire canyon fits inside the red area).
If, like on earth with the Grand Canyon, we want to study through the geology, we need to get into this canyon on Mars.
