Resort owner arrested for allowing use of surau by Buddhists

MALAYSIA

The owner of the resort is seen here in court this morning following his arrest. He has been remanded for four days. August 13, 2013.The owner of the resort is seen here in court this morning following his arrest. He has been remanded for four days. August 13, 2013.The owner of the resort in Kota Tinggi who had allowed a group of Buddhists to meditate in a surau there has been remanded for four days.

The Star Online reported that Kota Tinggi Sessions Court registrar Hairul Azhar Mohamad issued the remand order today against the resort owner who is a Singaporean with Malaysian permanent resident status.

The 45-year-old man was arrested on Sunday afternoon at the Tanjung Sutera Resort and is currently being investigated under Section 295 of the Penal Code for defiling a place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class.

His arrest came after a YouTube video portrayed a group who looked like monks conducting religious prayers in a surau, leading a group in meditation in front of a portrait of Buddha.

The 63-second video called "Chinese Buddhist pray in surau: surau becomes temple" was uploaded on August 10 and has generated more than 10,000 views.

It was reported in Berita Harian yesterday that the resort owner  defended his action saying that he did not think the action of giving permission to believers of other religions to use the surau was wrong.

He was quoted as saying: “This is because they only wanted to use the surau for meditation.

"So we allowed them to use the surau in the resort but their bringing other religious items into the surau was done without my knowledge." - Aug 13, 2013

The poor owner has not done anything wrong. On the contrary he should be commended for practising religious tolerance. Moreover the surau is his property and he is at liberty to use it in any way he likes provided it does not offend religious sensitivities! PAS and rational thinking Muslims like the former mufti of Perlis Dr Asri Zainal Abidin and SIS should come out to defend the poor owner! ABU ABU ABU!

These rooms were not even built to Surau standards so what is wrong with others using them for prayers and meditations?

Like the Seri Pristina school canteen debacle, the owner let his customers use the perhaps inappropriate facilities also with good intention, so why must the polis be so hard on him in this case?

The surau is just a room, a space within 4 concrete walls and part of the resort that belongs to the owner. Its his property. He has the right to let whoever use it, provided they do not do anything illegal. There is no law in our Federal Constitution that forbids owner of properties to let anybody use their properties for legal activities. For God's sake, they were just praying! . Its none of anybody's business to question him, unless those insane self-proclaimed protectors of Allah consider praying as an illegal act. By the way it should be Allah protecting us, not the other way round. Oh My Allah!...at the rate weird things are happening, only Allah can save Malaysia.

All foreign business owners and expats in Malaysia had better get some muslim advisors approval before they do anything. Otherwise may get arrested!

It is going to be a tougher times for all Non Muslim - where laws are put for minor issue, if they think Non Muslim should not get involved with them - it is high time the Government should change the currency ( Muslim and Non Muslim Notes and Coins ) Shopping Malls, Schools, and the list goes on - I am really sadden about this - the resort manager did on a good will - at the end he was even handcuffed like a criminal - OMG - Only God can save our country

Please release the poor fellow immediately
Whats the big fuss la....what is the harm and injury ocassioned, was someone stopped from using the place for his worship, did it interfere in any ongoing religeous activity
to anger disturb, interrupt anyone
The place was used by some people of another faith to pray, they PRAYED THERE
they did NOT remove defecate there or disturb any fixture or person
it is the owners right to allow any place of his to be used
if you think it was not a right thing to do just make an announcement OWNERS MUST PUT UP NOTICES AT PLACES OF WORSHIP AS TO WHO CAN USE THE PLACE
arresting the owner in this case and charging for 'defiling a place of worship' is exttreme
no one did anything knowingly to defile any place here,
no mens rea case !!
release the poor bloke immediately

Numerous shootings in Malaysia and PDRM is so efficient in nabbing ..... religious issues!!!
WoW... Does this mean that the Surau is the property of the Muslim community of Malaysia or the Mufti? It was in HIS resort by the way...? Furthermore, he wasn't even using the meditation to spread Buddhism to Muslims in the first place.

What I don't get is, if ones faith towards a certain religion is weak, would arresting certain individuals reinforce ones faith? This to me shows the incitement of fear.

Since facebook appeared, it has created more problems. Its time we ban facebook.
The owner should have state the prayer room is for multi faith usage instead of surau. All govenrment buildings and schools should change the surau into multi faith prayer rooms,

Yes, and there are too many violent crimes occurring right outside our doors. It's time we ban going outdoors. All Malaysians should just stay in their homes all the time.

I dont see what the big fuss and big deal. Dont punish both as the resort manager is innocent and the users are not aware of the talibanised mentality over in Malaysia. Just put up a sign saying non muslims are not allowed. Problem solved. Why witchhunt?

This proves it.

It is not a war between Muslims and non-Muslims.

It is a war by UMNO AGAINST MALAYSIANS.

Excellent! well done!! in handcuffs for allowing other faith practitioners to use a surau for prayers... while the hardcore heartless killers (criminals) roam the streets w impunity! Everything is upside down here

It is ok to use the Surau if no one was using it. They were just praying and meditating which is a good and peaceful act. It was done respectfully. What's wrong with that? What is ,ore wrong is what is being done now, arresting these people.

Kiblats can be found in most of the hotel rooms in Malaysia.

If other guests were to mediate or to conduct religious prayer in such rooms, can they be considered insulting Islam too???????

Something very fishy here.

1. Buddhists monks seldom do religious prayers, and even if they do, they usually do it in a temple of their own. It is strange that a group of monks decide to request for a room to do their prayers. Unheard of to be honest.

2. It is also strange for a group of monks to be staying in a resort. What are they doing there? Holidaying?

3. Why a surau? And why was a video recorded in this case? Isn't it clearly meant to stir up some trouble?

My bet on this matter is that it was staged. Staged by someone who wants to create trouble for the community in general. Someone who will benefit from the fissure between race and religion. And we all know which party that person belongs to now, don't we?

Base on what I read earlier; they book into resort and later requested for room to do meditation. No room was available and resort owner decide to allow use of surau. Look like they will on a retreat at the resort.

Let's set up an independent team to investigate what's happening. Was it staged? Yes, how did a video clip conveniently came into the picture. Another attempt to bring back the EO?

Looks like LKY was right. Malaysia has become a very orthodox and extremist Islamic country. And there is nothing our so-called leaders can do about it. The Religious Department has become the Islamic religious police!

You must be talking about religious intolerance!

In Malaysia non-muslim's tolerance of every thing islam is taken for granted. Meanwhile every thing about other religion is subject to the whims and fancies of the islamic religious authorities and adherents.

We are a multiracial society and it is a dream of many Malaysian that they can live, work and pray together under one roof. After all in times of disaster, don't you expect the churches or temples to open door for all victims including non believers to come in for shelter?

What insult to Islam is that if they use surau for meditation among themselves? Malaysia has gone crazy now and no more a tolerant country like before, every small thing can become an issue. Who knows one day the following will be charged too:
1) A lady wearing mini skirt walk pass a mosque -- charge for disrespect
2) A non Muslim man talking over his handphone while walk pass a mosque and say "Oh my god" -- charge for trying to spread his religion in front of mosque

The owner of the resort in Kota Tinggi should not be ashamed and should instead hold his head high up for doing the right thing. There is nothing wrong is letting others use the room to pray.

Only some narrow minded Muslims in Malaysia are to be blamed. These people think that they are righteous.

I read somewhere that a Surau has not been dedicated as Waqf for Salah. It can still belong to an individual, company or a group of people and it does not belongs to all Muslim. Due to this difference certain things that are forbidden in a Mosque are allowed in a Surau. For example a menstruating woman can sit in a Surau to listen to lectures or attend religious classes but she is not allowed to do that in a Mosque. Is this true???
